It’s straight in and no kissing on this re-edit of Harvey Mason’s ‘Groovin You’, which many of you will know as the sample source for Gusto’s huge mid 90′s house banger ‘Disco’s Revenge’.
Mason is best known to house-heads for this track and Locksmith’s ‘Far Beyond’, which provided that irresistable bass guitar line for ‘Red Alert’ by Basement Jaxx.
We assume that duo ensured some sweet paychecks for the man as he looked back on a career that included work with jazz legends like Herbie Hancock and Bob James, as well as on funky as all hell Mizell Brothers productions for the likes of Donald Byrd and Johnny Hammond. Here’s an example of that drumming with Donald Byrd and the sublimely seductive ‘Dominoes’. If any of you fellas out there are having problems with your lady, this sweet little groover will stand those problems all in a row, and you’ll watch em fall like…..
Harvey continues to play jazz with his Fourplay group and featured on Beck’s 2006 LP ‘The Information’. He’s a bit of a hero to us and like so many incredible musicians from the 60′s and 70′s, deserves to be held in higher esteem than he is. We’re sure he contents himself with those royalty checks though!
So anyway, back to the edit…. After going for the jugular with that big big hook, we go for a sweet extended tom-tom breakdown before letting the whole song go in a big messy splurge of disco joy. Now excuse us while we grab a towel from the end of the bed here…
